HANG Responds to Your Questions & Concerns on Feedback
- Sandra Jagmohan, President & CEO |
Frustration is an unwelcome part of the job hunt for most recent graduates and no one understands the cycle better than the staff and volunteering supporters of HireANewGrad, Inc.
Recently we conducted a survey with over 12,000 of you (new and recent graduates) and requested that you share your job search experiences with us. We thank you for your candid sharing as it only adds to our desire to see HireAnewGrad.com flourish and assist you all in securing new graduate positions rimmed with endless growth potential.
Many of you were understandable sad and frustrated with the catch 22 'no job no experience no experience no job' cycle. We empathize with your dilemma. After studying for many years (many of you through financial assistance or through the joggling of several jobs) it appears as though the career world has turned their backs on you. Well, if we too believed this every day (as it is so easy to) HireAnewGrad.com wouldn't exist and the many of you who have secured meaningful employment through our free services would still be at the drawing board.
We at HireAnewGrad are also dealing with frustrations. We have and continue to actively contact employers to enlighten them of not only the benefits of hiring new grads but also the benefits financially for them long term in posting their jobs on our site and ultimately branding their companies with us. Many of these employers still report 'not actively hiring new graduates', but we continue to persevere.
While we might be taking steps and not leaps initially, we are steadily gaining recognition and our message of the 'hidden talent behind new grads' is finally being heard by some of Canada's hiring corporate giants.
We've brainstormed about the issues and the myths surrounding hiring new grads and these were some areas we found that employers continue to perpetuate:
a) New Grads lack practical experience
In our opinion, New Grads lack the 'opportunity' to illustrate their experiences. Many of our new grads have successfully completed internships and co-ops as part of their post-secondary education making this myth simply NOT a reality. We invite you our members to always include your practical experience gained while in school to potential employers.
b) New Grads lack drive
This is blatantly untrue. New graduates have shared with us that in today's academia multi-tasking, conflict resolution and time management skills are amongst the most used skills in the classroom. New Grads lack drive? While students may not be working towards 'deadlines' and 'corporate meetings' as set out in the 'real world' our recent graduates share that respect of deadlines, team leadership and interpersonal skills set apart the average from the exceptional students in any learning environment.
c) New Grads have no commitment
New Grads know just how difficult it is to secure employment-let alone employment specific to their field as HireAnewGrad.com ONLY offers. Therefore, our recent graduates look forward to creating longstanding relationships with the employers and are usually more interested in marketing themselves as 'idea generators' in the office than thinking about leaving their jobs. New Grads are committed to the learning and executing of new tasks, networking within their industry to create corporate status within their career, and gaining knowledge and experience from the experiences of those more seasoned in their field. Our employer supporters have raved about the joys of mentoring 'new grad sponges' who are eager to 'learn the ropes."
These are only a few of the brainstorming ideas we came up with. We invite you to comment via email or Grad Forum. We are always interested in what you have to say-we are here not only to help you find employment compatible with your academic and skills background but also to help you create a platform where new grad issues can be aired safely and respectfully.
Many of you also experienced your desire for more job postings on HireAnewGrad.com. These improvements will come as we make further connections with corporate sponsors. In the interim don't forget that HireAnewGrad.com offers challenging employment opportunities too. Becoming a part of the HireAnewGrad.com team might not be a bad idea since we are steadily creating many of our senior management. If volunteering is your calling, while you continue to pursue other areas of work, we can use your expertise too. We are always looking for input-especially from the true source 'the new grad'.
In closing, please remember that HireAnewGrad.com was created by and for new grads just like you. It's easy, and even understandable, to be disgruntled with HireAnewGrad when employment does not come your way in a timely fashion and frankly we can't expect anything different. We can only promise to continue building our partnerships with Canadian companies so that one day all of our frustrations will be 'new grad memories'.
